Two of college football’s most storied programs will meet in a bowl game for the fourth time when 17th-ranked LSU faces 14th-ranked Notre Dame in the Citrus Bowl presented by Overton’s on New Year’s Day in Orlando.

LSU will be making its second consecutive trip, and fifth overall, to the Citrus Bowl, while Notre Dame will play in the bowl for the first time.
The Citrus Bowl will be nationally televised by ABC with a noon CT kickoff from Camping World Stadium (65,000). The game will also be streamed on WatchESPN, and will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network.

Tickets in LSU’s sections of the stadium are available at www.LSUtix.net.

“This is a tremendous matchup for our fans and college football,” LSU Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Joe Alleva said. “These are two historic programs with loyal fans all over the world. We know from experience this is a great New Year’s Day Bowl in a destination city and I want to thank the Citrus Bowl for selecting us.”

LSU, winners of six of its last seven games, brings a 9-3 overall mark into the contest. Notre Dame won eight of its first nine games, including victories over Southern Cal and Michigan State, and also stands at 9-3 overall.

LSU, which beat Louisville in last season’s Citrus Bowl, will compete in a postseason bowl game for the 18th-straight season and the 49th time in its history. The Tigers are 25-22-1 in bowl games including 2-2 in the Citrus Bowl.

Bossier Parish Community College will dedicate three combat wounded parking spaces at 9:15 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 7 — on the 76th anniversary of the invasion of Pearl Harbor. The dedication will take place at the Building H (Nursing and Allied Health Building) parking lot on the BPCC campus, 6220 E. Texas St.

“We cherish the opportunity to serve every single student that comes to BPCC,” said BPCC Chancellor Dr. Rick Bateman Jr. “But combat wounded veterans should hold a special place in everyone’s heart.”

According to the Wounded Warriors Family Support’s website, “there are an estimated 1.8 million Purple Heart recipients, combat wounded service members who have transitioned back into civilian life. They have made great sacrifices to ensure our freedoms but often go unrecognized. Wounded Warriors Family Support’s founder, Col. John Folsom, decided to change that. Wounded Warriors Family Support offers Combat Wounded Parking Signs, free of charge, to establishments as a way of honoring and recognizing these veterans.”

BPCC ordered three of the combat wounded parking signs and BPCC Physical Plant painted special parking spaces outside of the Administration building (Building A), the Student Services Building (Building F), and the new Nursing and Allied Health Building (Building H).

Free skin cancer screenings set Dec. 11 at Feist-Weiller Cancer Center

One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime. While it is the most common type of cancer to be diagnosed, skin cancer is also the easiest to cure, but early detection is important to treating skin cancer effectively. On Dec. 11, Feist-Weiller Cancer Center will host free face, scalp and neck skin cancer screenings.

Screenings will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the third floor of the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center, located at 1501 Kings Highway.

Dr. Paige E. Bundrick, Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology at LSU Health Shreveport, specializes in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, which includes skin cancer resection and reconstruction.

“Even a small skin cancer on the face can lead to life-changing scarring and destruction, particularly if they involve delicate areas like the eyelids, nose and lips,” Bundrick said. “Early detection is critical to allow a facial plastic reconstructive surgeon to treat these lesions with surgical techniques to restore functionality in cosmetically pleasing ways.”

If you have a lump, bump, skin discoloration or scaly areas of the skin in these areas that has failed to improve, making an appointment is encouraged.

Feist-Weiller Cancer Center has been providing free cancer screenings since 1999 through the Partners in Wellness (PIW) cancer screening program.

For more information or to make a screening appointment, please call Feist-Weiller at (318) 675-6262. Walk-ins will be welcome.

Since 2014, Give For Good has raised more than $6.3 million for North Louisiana nonprofit organizations. The event is a 24-hour online fundraising challenge that encourages community members to support their favorite groups and possibly find new causes that they care about. Next year’s Give For Good will take place on Tuesday, May 1, 2018.

Not only does the event provide a one-stop shop for donors, it provides organizations with the chance to earn bonus funds through the Lagniappe Fund and additional prizes throughout the day. The Lagniappe Fund, which totaled nearly a quarter million dollars in 2017, is divided up among the organizations based on the percentage of the total funds they raised during Give For Good. There are also more than $25,000 in prizes up for grabs. Although the online challenge sparks friendly competition among the organizations, our community ends up being the real winner at the end of the day.

So who is eligible to participate? Organizations must be a 501(c)(3) public charity and have received a ruling letter from the IRS stating the entity is a qualified recipient of tax-deductible gifts. Nonprofits also must be located in or provide direct services in North Louisiana. Contractors for the Bossier Parish Police Jury have begun construction work to extend and widen an access lane at one of south Bossier Parish’s busiest intersections.

Crews are in the process of improving the northbound merge lane from Sligo Rd. onto U.S. 71. Work began Monday morning and should be complete in three to four weeks if weather cooperates.

One lane of traffic (right hand lane) is closed on U.S. 71 from the Sligo Rd. intersection north and motorists are asked to exercise caution through the work zone. Also, the right lane of Sligo Rd. heading west to U.S. 71 is closed and drivers should be cautious entering U.S. 71 with the merge lane closed.

Funding for the project is being provided through a partnership between the state of Louisiana and the police jury.

Bossier City Council defeats open-container ordinance

The Bossier City Council voted 4-2 Tuesday to defeat a proposed city ordinance that would have allowed open containers in a designated area that included the new East Bank District, the Louisiana Boardwalk Outlets and Margaritaville Resort and Casino.

The vote was met with applause from those in the council chambers  who showed up in opposition to the proposal.

Jerry Dean, pastor of the Pentecostals of Bossier, was one of those who spoke out against the measure.

“Solomon said money answers all things,” he said. “I understand that, and it drives a lot of our decisions. As a pastor here in this city, I’m going to appeal to the council. Let’s not make a money decision today, and see if maybe God might favor us.”

David Alvis, owner of Silver Star Smokehouse supported the measure, specifically the potential benefit it would have for the Boardwalk.

“When I think about the Boardwalk, I think about it being one of the most beautiful places you’ve ever visited,” he said. “But the few times I go down there it’s like a ghost town. I know that the city has a great investment. I have a real interest in investing and doing what I do in the Boardwalk. There’s a great possibility we would be involved. But we have no interest whatsoever as it currently is, because there’s just not much going on down there.”

City Attorney Jimmy Hall said after the meeting that public opinion played a key role in the outcome.

“The ultimate deal is that when the public gets involved, sometimes it has an effect on the outcome,” he said.
